Finally Iphone 4 is in Canada today....

Hundreds of people lined up in Toronto, many overnight, to be the first in Canada to hold the new iPhone 4.

Despite complaints pouring in from the United States about Apple's latest gadget, many people outside the store Friday said they weren't concerned about the reports of minor signal problems with the phone.

Pepole waited overnight to get the iphone 4 first and according to Mr Chan - “It was worth the wait,” said an exhausted but happy Mr. Chan as he held the phone in his hand.  According to him “The improved screen, it's really crisp. It's beautiful, and the improved camera, HD video recording, and it can finally multi-task,”

The iPhone 4 differs from its previous incarnation, the iPhone 3GS, because it offers video calling and a high-resolution display, which the Apple website says produces a “sharper” image. It also has a 5-megapixels flash camera and HD video recording capabilities.

Despite complaints pouring in from the United States about Apple's latest gadget, many people outside the store Friday said they weren't concerned about reports that calls were being dropped when the phone was held a certain way.

For the first time, consumers were able to buy an unlocked iPhone, without a contract, which means they will be able to shop around with other carriers to find the best deal.

The 16 gigabyte model retails at $659 before taxes and the 32 gigabyte phone is $779.

Apple had promised to give away free rubber cases meant to improve reception. But customers in line were told they would not be receiving the cases, and could request them online.

1) There was no pre-order option in Canada.

2) Going to the US to buy one means buying it on Contract, breaking the contract and unlocking the phone.

3) We can buy unlocked iPhones in Canada.

4) The phones are cheaper here in Canada on contract than in the US.

83 year old Indian YOGI has not eaten or drank for seven decades.....He has a healthy brain of 25 years old...Amazing.

An 83-year-old Indian holy man who says he has spent seven decades without food or water has astounded a team of military doctors who studied him during a two-week observation period.
Prahlad Jani spent two weeks in a hospital in the western India state of Gujarat under constant surveillance from a team of 30 medics equipped with cameras and closed circuit television.

During the period, he neither ate nor drank and did not go to the toilet.

"We still do not know how he survives," neurologist Sudhir Shah told reporters after the end of the experiment. "It is still a mystery what kind of phenomenon this is."

The long-haired and bearded yogi was sealed in a hospital in the city of Ahmedabad as part of a study initiated by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the state defence and military research institute.

The DRDO hopes that the findings, which are set to be released in greater detail in several months, could help soldiers survive without food and drink, assist astronauts or even save the lives of people trapped in natural disasters.

"[Jani's] only contact with any kind of fluid was during gargling and bathing periodically during the period," G. Ilavazahagan, director of India's Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences, said in a statement.

Jani has since returned home to his village near Ambaji in northern Gujarat where he will resume his regular routine revolving around yoga and meditation.

He says that he was blessed by a goddess at a young age, which gave him special powers.

During the 15-day observation, which ended Thursday, the doctors took scans of Jani's organs, brain and blood vessels, as well as doing tests on his heart, lungs and memory capacity. "The reports were all in the pre-determined safety range through the observation period," Shah told reporters at a press conference last week. Other results from DNA analysis, molecular biological studies and tests on his hormones, enzymes, energy metabolism and genes will take months to come through.

"If Jani does not derive energy from food and water, he must be doing that from energy sources around him, sunlight being one," said Shah.

"As medical practitioners we cannot shut our eyes to possibilities, to a source of energy other than calories."

Bootable USB stick with Ubuntu and iRobot

Bootable USB Stick With Ubuntu

Here a two methods for putting the fresh new release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) on a USB stick. The first method will create a bootable USB stick with a live version and the second process will create a live version with persistence. Both methods are an excellent way to always have your favorite Ubuntu system and software with you.

iReboot

iReboot sits in your taskbar at startup (only taking up 400KB of memory) and lets you choose which operating system you want to reboot into. Instead of pressing restart, waiting for Windows to shut down, waiting for your BIOS to post, then selecting the operating system you want to boot into (within the bootloader time-limit!), you just select that entry from iReboot and let it do the rest.

Kids need minimum of 30 mins of exercise during a day....New Study

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology now recommends a minimum of 30 minutes a day.

Children and teens need less daily exercise than previously thought, a new study says.

Previous guidelines recommended children ages five to 17 get at least 90 minutes of daily physical activity. However, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology now recommends a minimum of 30 minutes a day - but 60 minutes or more would be better.

The Public Health Agency of Canada funded the society's research.

"We hope that these new findings will inspire inactive or sedentary Canadians of all ages to add more physical activity to their lives," said Dr. Mark Tremblay.

The study says most physical activity should be aerobic, such as walking, skating or riding a bike.

Activities like running and playing soccer should be done at least three times a week, the new guidelines say. Activities like skipping, jumping and playing in a park - which help build bone and muscle mass - should also be done three times a week.

As little as 30 minutes of exercise a day will produce health benefits, but the study says 60 minutes to several hours of moderate physical activity would be better.

"Some is good but more is clearly better," Tremblay said.

The research shows the more variety, intensity and longer duration, the greater the benefit. But reaching the minimum physical activity recommendations still helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure and reduce the risk of diabetes.
The minimum threshold to see health benefits has also been reduced for adults. The study says adults need 90 minutes of vigorous exercise a week, or 150 minutes of moderate physical activity.

Previous guidelines had recommended 30 to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity "most days of the week.² Brisk walking, swimming, raking leaves, jogging, hockey, aerobics, weight training and tennis are listed as options for adults to get exercise.

Benifits of GINGER

Ginger has been used as a natural remedy for many ailments for centuries. Now, science is catching up and researchers around the world are finding that ginger works wonders in the treatment of everything from cancer to migraines. Here are ten health benefits of this powerful herb:

Ovarian Cancer Treatment

Ginger may be powerful weapon in the treatment of ovarian cancer. A study conducted at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center found that ginger powder induces cell death in all ovarian cancer cells to which it was applied.

Colon Cancer Prevention

A study at the University of Minnesota found that ginger may slow the growth of colorectal cancer cells.

Morning Sickness

A review of several studies has concluded that ginger is just as effective as vitamin B6 in the treatment of morning sickness.

Motion Sickness Remedy

Ginger has been shown to be an effective remedy for the nausea associated with motion sickness.

Reduces Pain and Inflammation

One study showed that ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and is a powerful natural painkiller.

Heartburn Relief

Ginger has long been used as a natural heartburn remedy. It is most often taken in the form of tea for this purpose.

Cold and Flu Prevention and Treatment

Ginger has long been used as a natural treatment for colds and the flu. Many people also find ginger to be helpful in the case of stomach flus or food poisoning, which is not surprising given the positive effects ginger has upon the digestive tract.

Migraine Relief

Research has shown that ginger may provide migraine relief due to its ability to stop prostaglandins from causing pain and inflammation in blood vessels.

Menstrual Cramp Relief

In Chinese medicine, ginger tea with brown sugar is used in the treatment of menstrual cramps.

Prevention of Diabetic Nephropathy

A study done on diabetic rats found that those rats given ginger had a reduced incidence of diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage).

Have YEAST infections??? Ladies....Read this

Tea Tree Oil can be used as a highly effective douche treatment against yeast infections. It is recommended that you purchase a small dropper bottle that can be used to store the solution.

•Combine 1 teaspoon of Tea Tree Oil with 1 teaspoon of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol).
•Mix the solution, which should appear milky white.
•Store the solution in the dropper bottle.
•Add 10 drops of the solution to a pint of water.
•Use this douche once a day for a week in order to rinse the vagina.

NOTE: Using Tea Tree Oil during pregnancy is not recommended. During pregnancy, it is best to consult with your doctor before using any treatment.

Natural Remedy for Yeast Infection With Yogurt

The active bacterial cultures in yogurt help to fight yeast, which is one of the main reasons why many people have found it to be effective at treating a yeast infection. In the case of vaginal infections, a simple remedy is to dip a tampon in plain, unsweetened yogurt, and insert the tampon into the vagina. Repeat this twice a day until symptoms disappear. For other types of yeast infections, applying yogurt directly onto the surface for 10 to 15 minutes each day works well.

If your infection persists for longer than a week, it is best to consult your doctor.

Garlic as a Natural Cure for Yeast Infection

Many people have found that garlic is wonderful at fighting yeast infections. Simply insert one garlic clove directly into the vagina, and repeat this every few hours for 2 days. You can also take garlic internally, either as tablets or by crushing a fresh garlic clove into a few small pieces and quickly swallowing the pieces with a glass of water.

Teeth Whitening Using Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide

Baking soda is known to help make teeth appear whiter since it helps to scrub the surface of the teeth without damaging tooth enamel. This is one of the reasons why many toothpastes advertise their baking soda content. A simple home remedy is to mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide and use this mixture as a toothpaste. The hydrogen peroxide acts as a bleaching agent, and it also helps break down stain-absorbing particles between teeth, allowing them to be easily rinsed away.

•Add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide into a small cup.
•Add one tablespoon of baking soda.
•Mix together until a paste is created.
•Add some of the paste onto your toothbrush, and brush your teeth gently.
•Rinse your mouth, and then brush your teeth using a regular toothpaste with fluoride.

Use this remedy once per week, and you should start to see results within one month. It is important to avoid using this remedy on a daily basis, since the abrasive properties of baking soda can wear down the enamel on your teeth.

Teeth Whitening by Rinsing with Water

Rinsing your mouth with water right after you drink soda, coffee, tea, or any flavored and colored drink is one of the best teeth whitening remedies. This prevents the color from building up in your teeth, which is one of the leading causes of yellow stained teeth. Brushing your teeth after every meal is an even better idea, but water is excellent since it is much more convenient than carrying around a toothbrush.

Fenugreek can treat arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, improve digestion and maintain a healthy metabolism.

Fenugreek (also known as Greek Hay, Fenigreek and Methi), is a herb that is commonly found growing in the Mediterranean region of the world. While the seeds and leaves are primarily used as a culinary spice, it is also used to treat a variety of health problems in Egypt, Greece, Italy, and South Asia.

Fenugreek seeds have been found to contain protein, vitamin C, niacin, potassium, and diosgenin (which is a compound that has properties similar to estrogen). Other active constituents in fenugreek are alkaloids, lysine and L-tryptophan, as well as steroidal saponins (diosgenin, yamogenin, tigogenin, and neotigogenin).

What are the Benefits of Fenugreek?

Due to its estrogen-like properties, fenugreek has been found to help increase libido and lessen the effect of hot flashes and mood fluctuations that are common symptoms of menopause and PMS. In India and China it has also been used to treat arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, improve digestion, maintain a healthy metabolism, increase libido and male potency, cure skin problems (wounds, rashes and boils), treat sore throat, and cure acid reflux. Fenugreek also has a long history of use for the treatment of reproductive disorders, to induce labor, to treat hormonal disorders, to help with breast enlargement, and to reduce menstrual pain. Recent studies have shown that Fenugreek helps lower blood glucose and cholestrol levels, and may be an effective treatment for both type 1 and 2 diabetes. Fenugreek is also being studied for its cardiovascular benefits.

Uses of Fenugreek

Home Remedy for Balancing Cholesterol

Studies have found people who took 2 ounces (56g) of fenugreek seed each day had significantly (around 14 percent) lower cholesterol levels after 24 weeks, and had lowered their risk of heart attack by more than 25 percent. Therefore, a recommended remedy for lowering cholesterol is to take 2 ounces of Fenugreek seeds throughout the day. The seeds can be sprinkled onto prepared food, or they can be consumed with water if they are in capsule form.

Treating Diabetes and Lowering Blood Sugar Levels

Studies have shown that participants with type 2 diabetes had significantly lower blood sugar levels after eating fenugreek. Therefore, a recommended home remedy for treating Type 2 diabetes is to consume 500mg of fenugreek twice daily.

Herbal Cure for Skin Inflammation

Research has shown that Fenugreek is an effective topical treatment for skin problems such as abscesses, boils, burns, eczema, and gout. Therefore, a simple skin inflammation remedy is the following:

•Take a spoonful of fenugreek and grind it into a powder.
•Mix the ground fenugreek with warm water.
•Take a simple piece of clean cloth and soak it into the mixture.
•Apply the soaked cloth directly onto the affected skin as a poultice.

Natural Cure for Heartburn and Acid Reflux

Fenugreek seeds contain a lot of mucilage, which helps sooth gastrointestinal inflammation by coating the lining of the stomach and intestine. Therefore, for an effective remedy against heartburn or Acid Reflux, simply sprinkle 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds onto your food. Another option is to take one teaspoon of Fenugreek seeds and swallow them with water or juice before any meal.

Home Remedy for Fever

The Fenugreek herb has been known to help reduce fever when taken with lemon and honey, since it nourishes the body during an illness. Therefore, to treat a fever, simply consume one to two teaspoons of Fenugreek seeds three times a day along with an herbal tea (such as green tea) with a teaspoon of honey and lemon juice. Some health food stores also sell herbal Fenugreek teas, which can be used instead of the green tea.

Breast Enlargement

Fenugreek is often used in many teas and other products that help balance women's hormones and/or enlarge the breasts. Therefore, a simple home remedy for breast enlargement is to make Fenugreek a part of your regular diet. A common suggestion is to consume up to 3g of Fenugreek per day.

Remedy to Ease Child Birth for Pregnant Women

Fenugreek stimulates uterine contractions and can be helpful to induce childbirth. However, pregnant women should only use Fenugreek for inducing labor after consulting with their doctor.

Remedy to Aid Milk Production in Lactating Women

Fenugreek has been known to increase milk production in lactating women. Research has even shown that milk production can increase by over 500 percent within 24 to 72 hours after consuming fenugreek. Although it is not known why this happens, researchers speculate that the oil contained in fenugreek seeds plays a role. Therefore, a recommended remedy to increase milk flow is to consume one capsule of fenugreek seed (at least 500mg) three times a day.

What are the Side Effects of Fenugreek?

While Fenugreek is generally considered to be safe when used moderately, there have been reports of a few minor side-effects. Nausea is one common side effect, while other people have reported gastrointestinal discomfort (diarrhea and/or gas). Also, when using fenugreek topically on the skin, it is important to watch out for skin irritations and rashes.

Fenugreek use during pregnancy is not recommended, since it has the potential to induce labor. If you are pregnant and wish to take it, you should do so only after consultation with your doctor.

If you are currently taking any oral medications, you should always use Fenugreek at least 2 hours before or after these drugs. This is important since Fenugreek fiber has the potential to interfere with the absorption of oral medications due to its mucilaginous fiber (which gives it a moist and sticky texture).

Symmetrix - EMC enterprise storage still running even after falling on the floor after massive earthquake in Chile....Amazing

This is not a photoshop edited image, it is the fact and I have read that it is still serving data. and everything is still intact.

Metrocity Torronto to get additional area code and there are lots of other cities in Canada have extra number set aside for future use.

As the population grows and cellphone subscribers multiply exponentially, Canada is running out of new area codes.

The CRTC announced Tuesday that the suburbs surrounding Toronto will become the first region in the country to have three different area codes.

The new number, 365, will be introduced on March 25, 2013, a year before the area’s existing codes — 905 and 289 — are expected to be exhausted. A fourth area code, 742, has also been set aside.

Overlay or relief codes, as they are known, are multiple area codes assigned to one region, and there are only so many to go around. The available options are quickly being reserved for major urban centres across Canada, although they are not always accepted willingly.

In Vancouver, residents already dial 604 or 778, while the area code 942 has been identified as a potential future number for the 902 region of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Manitoba will soon have a second area code in addition to 204.

And next month, 343 will pop up on displays along with 613 for calls from the Ottawa region.

But while the new numbers are necessary, they are not always popular.

North America has about 750 usable area codes, said Mr. Pilley, divided among Canada, the United States and about 20 Caribbean nations. The codes cannot start with 0 or 1, which route directly to the operator or indicate a long-distance call. And they cannot end with the numbers 11, which are reserved for emergency or information calls. And no one, he says, wants the area code 666.

About 10 years ago, area codes began “going like hotcakes” in the United States as cellphones became popular. California, for example, has more area codes than all of Canada.

At the request of the Canadian government, 50 area codes were set aside for Canadian use, and fewer than 30 remain unassigned.

To determine an overlay area code for a specific region, the CNA compares the available numbers to local central office codes — the first three digits in a phone number — to avoid duplication.

“There’s so many rules it would make your head spin,” Mr. Pilley said of the selection process.

The reaction to the new area codes is more visceral than scientific.

According to UrbanDictionary.com, 905 is a term used by Toronto residents (416ers) to imply that someone is “bland, boring, unsophisticated and/or ignorant.”

And Toronto is not the only city to have such hang-ups about their digits.

In the 1990s, an episode of Seinfeld dealt with a character’s panic when she was assigned a new phone number in New York City, the first in North America to have more than one area code.

Since then, area codes have been used as shorthand for regional affinities in TV shows, movies and hip hop anthems.

Denis Carmel, a spokesman for the CRTC, said that because 10-digit dialling is now the norm across Canada, fewer people object to new area codes.

In Toronto, young people identify with the number 647, an area code that was once perceived as a telephone kiss of death.

And when Montreal got a new code recently, few people reacted strongly.

“It’s amazing how quickly people adapt,” he said.

The reintroduction of old numbers as people ditch their land lines and toss out their fax machines is expected to slow the pace of area code expansion.

But within the next 30 years, Mr. Pilley predicts that North America will run out of 10-digit numbers, leading to the next phone-related identity crises.

That’s when the CRTC will introduce four-digit area codes and central office codes, he said.

In the meantime, Toronto residents should avoid being smug about the 905 region’s new number.

A third area code for Toronto will be unveiled next year.

Travelling down South? starting tomorrow you can carry two carry-on bags...

Canadians flying to the U.S. can take two carry-on bags and personal items with them on a plane, starting Thursday April 8 2010 announced by Transport Minister John Baird

Restrictions on carry-on bags for Canadian airline passengers flying to the U.S. were made following the Dec. 25, 2009 terrorist attack on a Northwest Airlines flight between Amsterdam and Detroit.

Immediately after the failed bomb attack, Canada placed a ban on carry-on luggage. The government loosened restrictions in January, allowing passengers flying to the U.S. one carry-on bag and some personal items, including purses, laptops and camera bags.

“With more robust air security measures in place for passengers, we are able to remove the temporary carry-on baggage restrictions put into place following the December terrorist attack,” Baird said in a release. Those security measures include full body scanners at airports and screening systems to detect passengers exhibiting suspicious behaviours.

Passengers can check with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority or their airline for more information.

Baja earthquake kills 2 people in Mexico

At least two deaths are being blamed on a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that was centered in Baja California, Mexico and felt all over Southern California on Easter Sunday, rocking high rise buildings from San Diego to Los Angeles.

Both deaths occurred in Mexico, officials said. One man died when his home collapsed on him, according to Baja California state Civil Protection Director Alfredo Escobedo. The man's home was very close to the quake's epicenter, just outside Mexicali.

This home in Mexicali collapsed from the force of Easter Sunday's 7.2 magnitude quake.

A second man was killed when he panicked as the ground shook, ran into the street and was struck by a car.
According to Escobedo, there were reports of people trapped in collapsed homes in Mexicali and rescue teams from nearby Tijuana were called in to help.

There are no reports of U.S. deaths or injuries. The quake struck about 6 miles below the earth's surface at 3:40 p.m. PT Sunday, about 110 miles east-southeast of Tijuana, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

After examining data, seismologists upgraded the size of Sunday's 25-second quake from a magnitude 6.9 to 7.2, according to Dr. Lucy Jones of Caltech.

"This is the largest earthquake since the [7.3 magnitude] Landers earthquake of 1992," Jones said, "A 7.2 is going to happen over a pretty long fault, probably close to 50 miles long."

Scientists believe the quake originated on the Laguna Salada fault, which has not produced a major temblor in more than a century, according to preliminary data.

The last time the fault unleashed a similar-sized quake was in 1892.

It has since produced occasional magnitude 5 earthquakes. According to reports, the force from Sunday's temblor caused high-rise buildings in San Diego to sway back and forth around 30 seconds before rocking high-rise buildings in downtown Los Angeles.

Caltech officials reported that over 20 million people felt shaking related to the 7.2 magnitude earthquake.

ipod creater Tony Fadell leaving Apple after 9 years to go green

Tony Fadell, one of the integral creators of the iPod, has resigned from his position at Apple, a move that ends a nine year relationship with Cupertino - a period that spanned a tremendous era of growth, much of which Fadell was personally responsible for.

Widely referred to as the godfather of the iPod, Fadell spent seven years as the Senior VP of the iPod division at Apple and another two years consulting Apple as the company hit new highs, both in consumer popularity and Wall Street dominance. In his last two years, Fadell worked closely with Steve Jobs and essentially served as a personal adviser to the Apple boss.

Interestingly, Fadell's days at Apple began when he joined the iPod engineering team nearly a decade ago. Fadell would even become head of the department when he replaced Jon Rubenstein. Does that name sound familiar? Rubenstein is now Palm's CEO. And while his name was not widely known or acclaimed, Fortune magazine cited Fadell as one of the chief architects of the modern portable music player.

Although Apple hasn't publicly offered comment on Fadell's departure, some are curious as to why he would choose this exciting time at his company to bid farewell. Fadell, however, tells the New York Times that he is eager to go green

LinkedIn to open office in Toronto

LinkedIn, the popular online social networking service for business professionals, announced Monday it plans to open an office in Toronto as part of an international expansion plan that has seen the U.S. Internet company set up shop in Australia, Ireland, The Netherlands, India and the United Kingdom.

In moving to establish a footprint in Canada in the next few months, LinkedIn plans to hire a full team, including a Canadian country manager who will help oversee the company's ambitions to increase its user base, grow its advertising business and further its subscription and recruiting businesses here.

Launched in 2003, LinkedIn's user base has grown to more than 60 million professionals in more than 200 countries, with more than half its membership now outside the United States, the company said last month.

To land a job at LinkedIn Canada, applicants will probably need to have a profile on LinkedIn itself. That's because, like other Canadian companies including Research In Motion Ltd. and Royal Bank of Canada, LinkedIn plans to use its own user base as a means of finding someone to fill the country manager's role.

As a testament to Canadians' love for social media -- we were among the fastest adopters of Facebook outside the United States -- LinkedIn's user base in this country now exceeds two million accounts, the company says.

"[Canada's] not only one of the fastest-growing markets, but it's also one of the most-engaged markets for us around the world," said Arvind Rajan, vice-president of international for LinkedIn.

"In fact, engagement levels in Canada are higher for us than even levels in the U.S., which is not a typical. A lot of Internet companies find that their Canadian membership is the most active of any region."

LinkedIn began as an online rolodex for professionals primarily in the technology industry, but the service has evolved to become an important component of millions of online resumes from all sectors and a prime drawing pool of talent for thousands of businesses.

Mr. Rajan said that LinkedIn realized that to be successful in Canada, the company needed a Canadian presence.

"You can't do that from here in the United States because the market is different in Canada, it's unique," he said in a telephone interview from the company's Mountain View, Calif. head office.

"We want to be able to speak to our members in Canada in a unique way, through a Canadian team, which is why we're taking the approach of opening an office there. That's the reason why we've done the same thing in other markets around the world. There's only so much that one can do from a central location without being closer to our customers, understanding their needs and developing solutions that make sense for them."

Unlike other social networking services that have struggled to define business plans despite user bases numbering in the millions -- for example, Twitter -- LinkedIn has been profitable since 2007 thanks to its three-pronged revenue-generating strategy, which includes display advertising, subscription services and recruitment tools for potential employers.

As the economic downturn took hold, LinkedIn found its user base exploding as thousands laid off workers turned to the website to tap their personal networks for any job lead they could find.
"What's been great has been that that led to a boost in week-over-week membership growth, but that rate has continued," Mr. Rajan said. "It has continued to accelerate around the world. That part wasn't that surprising. In times of economic uncertainty, it causes people to think about their career, and it's led to people using LinkedIn more and more. However, what's also been true for the last year has been that all of our revenue lines have grown aggressively and it has proven the robustness of our business model."

Sergey Brin on Google China's move

Sergey Brin said there had been little clarity in recent negotiations with the Chinese government. That was the message from a brief interview in New York on Monday with Sergey Brin, Google’s co-founder, shortly after the company announced that it was moving its Chinese Internet search engine to Hong Kong.

The former British colony has been part of China since 1997, but operates under a “one country, two systems” philosophy. The mainland authorities do not censor political news and searches on the Web in Hong Kong.

The shift of its Chinese service to Hong Kong, Mr. Brin said, was not given a clear-cut stamp of approval by Beijing. But he said there was a “back and forth” with the Chinese government on what to do. “There was a sense that Hong Kong was the right step,” Mr. Brin said, but he added: “There’s a lot of lack of clarity. Our hope is that the newly begun Hong Kong service will continue to be available in mainland China.”  Later he added: “The story’s not over yet.”

The United States government, Mr. Brin stressed, was not involved in shaping the company’s policy. “This has all been up to Google,” he said.
Mr. Brin lived in the Soviet Union until he was nearly 6 years old, and he said the experience of living under a totalitarian system that censored political speech influenced his thinking — and Google’s policy. “It has definitely shaped my views, and some of my company’s views,” he said.

Two months ago Google cited hacking attempts on its networks and evidence of spying on the Gmail accounts of Chinese dissidents as motivations for reconsidering its China stance. Mr. Brin said those episodes were “deeply troubling.” He stopped short of saying the Chinese government was directly involved in those activities. But, he added: “I know what the goal was. So it really doesn’t matter.”

Mr. Brin went out of his way to say there were many reasons for the Chinese government to be proud of its achievements, especially its impressive economic development, “lifting so many people out of poverty.”

He noted that the Chinese government is large, with millions of officials, and varying points of view.

But in matters of censorship, political speech and Internet communications, he said, there is a totalitarian mentality that controls policy. “Our objection is to those forces of totalitarianism,” he said.

Since Google said in January that it might pull its Chinese search operation out of the mainland, bloggers have speculated that the company might then develop and distribute software tools to sidestep censorship. But when asked, Mr. Brin said, “I think those tools are going to come of their own accord. I don’t think we have to do anything.”

Google’s actions, he said, may play a long-run role in easing Internet censorship in China. ”Our hope is there is progress and a more open Internet in China,” he observed.

Mr. Brin added that efforts by China, Iran and other governments to control online speech — a “half an Internet” approach, he said – will likely fail eventually. “I think that in the long term, they are going to have to open,” he said.

Intel's latest Light Peak technology allows you to connect devices and transfer data at a fiber speed.

USB 3.0 is the latest and greatest of the USB specs that is becoming available at the moment. However, Intel have some other ideas that include fibre optics for transferring data from device to device.

The new technology displayed by Intel at the developer forum is called Light Peak and it allows you to connect many devices to a PC with fibre optic lines. The technology might just seem like an idea for now, but Intel have managed to get endorsement from Sony and are looking to make the technology mainstream.

Intel wont be able to make this happen alone, so rather than trying it alone they are wanting to work with USB to see if they can come up with a fibre optic based USB system.
The new “SuperSpeed” USB 3.0 has 5 gigabit-per-second data transfer rate, more than 10 times that of the USB 2.0 version that prevails today, and the first USB 3.0 device achieved certification last week. A separate new USB feature increases the amount of power that USB devices can use from 0.5 amps to 0.9 amps while adding another 1.5 amps specifically for charging batteries, making USB for tasks besides just transferring data.

“At some point the industry is going to have to transition,” Jeff Ravencraft, the USB-IF’s president and chairman, said in an interview, because copper wires such as those in the current USB 2 and new USB 3 standards have limits on how fast they can transmit signals. “I think the next transition is going to be to optics.”

Light Peak already is in use on pre-production chips and it could be ready to ship next year. As it works not it is capable of transferring data at 10Gbps in both directions. However, Intel have said that in the next decade we could easily see 100Gbps being transferred over Light Peak.

GM cooks up next-gen windshield display

General Motors, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Southern California have cooked up next-generation windshield technology that will integrate sensors, cameras and images to enhance a driver’s vision.

The so-called “head up” display technology builds on the GM system brought to market in 1988. The general idea is to create a windsheld that leverages night vision, navigation and sensor technology to improve driver visibility. The first generation head up technology is in GM’s Corvette, GMC Acadia, Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac STS, but only uses a small part of the windshield.

According to GM, the next-gen technology will use the entire windshield as a device. GM hasn’t identified any specific models for the technology but expects it to wind up in vehicles in the near future.

The next-gen windshield is coated transparent phosphors that emit light when excited by a compact laser. That laser turns the windshield into a large transparent display. The application could be helpful in fog, night or stormy conditions.
